Spare No Effort: AIDS ACTION FOR LIFE

(This article is as it appeared in the Oblate Journal for 2005.)

We must spare no effort to extend the saviour's empire and destroy the dominion of hell are St. Eugene's words in the constitution and rules preface, page 22. He continues to say that we, as oblates, must lead people to act like human beings, first of all, and then like Christians, and finally, we must help them to become saints. How do we do this?

When I came to Cedara early 2004, I got interested in the Aids Action group at St. Joseph's Theological Institute. My impression was, ‘well, it's one of those groups which talk about Hiv/Aids awareness and abstinence: I've been through that !!!' Anyhow, having been involved for almost two years now, I have a different impression. The group is more than only what it sounds. It is not just all about Hiv/Aids. As a matter of fact, it is one way of responding to God's call through St. Eugene de Mazenod who dared for the young people.

Through the topics given in workshops, it is evident that these many young people are led to authenticity, which is acting like human beings. This is seen in topics such as self-awareness, self-esteem, decision making, peer pressure and many more others. In addition, we do also have some kind of prayer services which do not only include catholics but non catholica as well.. Therefore, the boys and girls who attend workshops are being led to christian activities.

I have liked the group so much that I am going to miss it next year during my regency However I hope to do or continue with whatever I have learnt through my preparations for workshops. Each time I was getting ready for a workshop, I found myself learning alot from the topics I prepared to share. And from here, thanks to to group because I as well attained much growth.

It has been very demanding and challenging but because I chose freely to be a member of the group, I commited myself to that which I was suppose to do. Life is too short and it is the matter of choices, ‘cause and effect', why waste it instead of leading yourself and others to acting like human beings, first of all, and then like christians, and finally become saints?

At this moment, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the brothers in the community who have been very much involved in the running of Aids Action group. I also thank a few community members for rendering their support. But I think the group has not really been recognised as ‘oblate' experience so far because, according to my observation and experience, I have not really seen that zeal from the community at large in helping or supporting Aids Action members.

In conclusion, I ask the community to be very much involved because I feel the group does sum up St. Eugene's plea when he asks us to lead people to action as human beings, christians and becoming saints. I am sure our founder would be very happy to see his oblates having such daring spirit for the young people who seem to be neglected to some extent. For all the Aids Action group members, let us live what we have been teaching through out the year in our workshops. And as we come to the close of the year, I wish you all a wonderful ending, good pastoral and restful break. "Let us spare no effort"

MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!
